Yes. I know this is a food blog with plenty of recipes, also for lazy occasions. But really, don’t you have those days when you just really don’t feel like cooking? I know you do. I do all the time. But still, that doesn’t mean I don’t want great food, satisfying and effortless. Just to feel a little spoiled.
Well, combine that feeling with the emails I’ve been getting from readers visiting or living in Amsterdam who are asking for recommendations for favorite food spots, as well as our Amsterdam Cooks Facebook group where we foodies share recipes, places to buy special ingredients, food workshops and general yumminess we’ve come across town. Combine all that and that’s how this new corner in the blog was born: Eating Out. Tah-Dam!
I’m not so sure how this is going to play itself, but I do know one thing: The first place I just have to recommend you guys.
Sir Hummus
As an Israeli, hummus for me feels like home. But even if you didn’t grow up with hummus playing a part in each meal; when you walk into Sir Hummus in the famous De Pijp neighborhood, you will still feel a sense of home. The small shop sells hummus to eat there or take away, it has a fairly simple menu suited for vegans as well as omni’s and offer a few small tables to sit by.
Lines of jarred salt brined pickles, huge crates of tahini and a colorful fun surrounding set the atmosphere. Simple, quick and delicious. The hummus is served the traditional way, warm with a variety of toppings, sided by fresh chopped salad, pickles, spicy sauces and warm soft pita bread (white or whole wheat).
Every bite is so fresh, the hummus is made every day from scratch from high quality ingredients and they have taken it upon themselves to set the record straight on the store bought hummus dips we’ve come to see in every local supermarket, which contain a lot of vegetable fat, preservatives and honestly, don’t taste so good. Here you can trust what you’re eating and enjoy a healthy meal full of protein, good fats and nutrients.
What did we try
The menu is fairly simple, chose a large or small hummus plate and which topics you would like.
My mom who was visiting me from Israel had one large ‘Complete’ which is a large hummus bowl with fava beans and a beautiful hard boiled, browned and smokey egg drizzles with Tahini (Served with 2 Pitas, fresh veggies & homemade pickles) €11 . She also had some freshly squeezed orange juice ( €2.5).
My vegan boyfriends went for the large ‘Vegan Heaven’ which is one large hummus bowl with pikant aubergine stewed in red sauce topped with roasted pine nuts (Served with 2 Pitas, fresh veggies & homemade pickles) – €10.75
And I went with my usual small ‘Carnivora’ a small hummus bowl with slow cooked, soft-fall-apart meat and roasted pine nuts (Served with 1 Pita, fresh veggies & homemade pickles) – €10.50
Seriously though, just look at these pink pickles. Gorgeous, crunchy and delicious.
The food is incredibly fresh, delicious and always consistent every time I eat at Sir Hummus. But what really makes the difference for me is the human factor. The staff there is always friendly, always welcoming. There’s just a family vibe in the air that is so chill and natural. It’s always a great place to take a break for me.
Also, they are doggy friendly! Pi got some delicious pull apart meat from the kitchen <3
To summarize, if you’re looking for a simple and delicious, healthy meal. With a decent price and a welcome-home-kind-of-vibe – Sir Hummus is your spot.
Just please, don’t forget to wipe your hummus with a piece of pita!
